I could be having the worst day ever or just feeling generally under the weather. Put a bowl of pho in front of me and suddenly things seem a lot better.
It depends, but it’s all unhealthy. Some kind of deep fried food is usually my first choice, but it could also be mac & cheese, grilled cheese sandwich, cheese and crackers with pepperoni, sometimes Fritos and dip. Pretty much always followed by some kind of candy bar.
Comfort food: macaroni and cheese, chewy brownies with chocolate frosting, chicken quesodilla from Tbell with MDew BajaBlast, rich hot chocolate on a cold November day, any bag of chips that is available, large bowl of watermelon on a hot August night. Depends on what’s available, where I am.
Last night, I came home to my husband’s homemade chicken soup with egg noodles. Since he’d boiled the chicken with the skin on, he made me “cracklins” with the chicken skin! Holy moly, people. New favorite comfort food combo!
@augustlan: We Jews have been doing this for 5000 years. Waste not, want not.The Yiddish word is gribenes and must be made with rendered chicken fat, callled schmaltz
I guess because it is not part of the traditional seder, which uses predominantly food fraught with symbolism. That chopped nuts and apples and grape juice mush, for example, represents the mortar used to lay the bricks during the Jews’ enslavement in Egypt, or so it was told.
@gailcalled In addition to the symbolic foods on the Seder plate, my mother-in-law always made matzo ball soup with whole chicken pieces for Passover. That skin just went to waste after boiling. <sobs>
Cracklins = fried skin/fat, but usually from pork.
Which is why I say the Jews can be our own worst enemies. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have more heart attacks than the average population. LOL.
I hadn’t thought to fry up the skins, but I am going to do it for my husband next time I make chicken broth, he will love that. The only time I sometimes buy pork rinds is when I make black bean soup, but instead I am going to fry up some chicken skins I think and try it.
