Apparently Ariel Castro, the guy who kidnapped and held those three women in Cleveland for ten years, hung himself in his prison cell last night. Is this justice? Is this a good outcome?

This doesn’t say much for the security of the prison system in the state of Ohio, that’s for sure.

My views:

1) he didn’t do this alone. Someone somehow either hung him, or threatened him to hang himself. I didn’t see him as suicidal.

2) He death saved the State hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. He was going to be incarcerated until he died. Look at the money that’s to be saved.

3) The women – the victims – now have some closure. Good for them. They can move on with their lives.

I think an exit like Jeffrey Dahmer’s would have been more appropriate, but that’s just me.

Good riddance, asshole.

filmfann's avatar

I really don’t know what to say about this. You can’t feel sorry for him, but it would be wrong to rejoice.
I do hope this helps the girls move on, but I doubt it will.

I guess for me this is one of the rare instances where it is what it is.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

It will definitely save tax dollars, and good riddance to a damned scumbag! I hope he’s held captive in hell for eternity!

syz's avatar

Hmmm. So those women survived captivity for 10 years, and he couldn’t hack it a few months?

They say karma is a b!tch. And so am I. My feelings are—they don’t want to admit that someone got to him. Gave him what he deserved. Would be interested to know if, before it happened, HE became someone’s sex slave.
Couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. He should not have been breathing the same air as his victims. I know God will punish me in the long run but he really did not deserve to live.

I guess I don’t see the correlation between a prisoner hanging himself with his bedsheet and poor prison security.

I think it is a perfect outcome. I wonder if the guards encouraged him to kill himself. I wouldn’t be bothered if they did.

I am not surprised. I think he has had tormenting moments of conscience, however short lasting. I wouldn’t want to be inside of his mind for a fraction of a second.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Hung himself in seg? I’m skeptical that he hung himself.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@KNOWITALL – I agree, that’s just not credible. On the other hand, who cares, really?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@elbanditoroso I’m copacetic with this outcome after reading about multiple rapes, multiple miscarriages after beatings, etc….

I think he’s gotten enough publicity and taken enough of our brain power. Happy trails, dude.

ucme's avatar

He looked all choked up at the sentence hearing, so…

1TubeGuru's avatar

It is a good outcome in the sense that Ariel Castro can never hurt anyone again.

I don’t think anybody can say for sure he was suicidal or not, without being a medical professional or at the least, having access to doctor and therapists’ reports. I would have felt better knowing he was suffering in jail for life, as I think death, on occasion, is an easy out. I am aware that his incarceration would cost the system big bucks over his lifetime, but I think that would be better justice than his cop out suicide, if it was a suicide. Also, if he did commit suicide, then does his family have any legal recourse, since he should have been on suicide watch or at least, better supervised? Ditto for if he was murdered. Does the family have legal recourse? Regardless of what we think of him and his heinous crimes, the family may still have a successful lawsuit on their hands.

Good riddance. Although, he got off easy. I guess if he was raped and tortured a little bit while in prison there was some justice. What a horrible man. That’s when you hope the Christians are right, he should rot in hell. I’m glad the tax payers are spared paying to support him in jail.

However, I will say this. It doesn’t matter what I think, it matters what those three girls think. Do they feel closure? Is death too simple for him at this point? Did they need him to suffer more? I really only care about what they feel. It’s impossible for me to know how I would feel in that situation. I think I would be glad he is dead, they can go dance on his grave, but generally I don’t like when people rejoice about the end of a life. Even an evil one.

gondwanalon's avatar

So what if someone gave that monster a rope? In my opinion all prison cells of evil SOB’s like this scum should come equipped with a rope.

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie I don’t want to derail the thread by a back and forth, but in my own experience, there is no such thing as closure after real trauma. There is only more time and distance.

JLeslie's avatar

@janbb I’d have to agree with that. I used that word because it was mentioned above, but your point is well taken.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Well, it’s a better outcome than him never getting caught. But, I do hate it when they cop out like that.

DominicX's avatar

I’m not going to “rejoice”, but I can’t say I miss him. It’s the same outcome as the death penalty, without the expense. So good riddance.

Blondesjon's avatar

Must have sucked for him. I didn’t feel a thing.

elbanditoroso's avatar

At least the prison guards didn’t come by and tell him to hang in there..

OpryLeigh's avatar

To be honest the first thing I thought when I heard this was “think of the money saved”. That’s really my only thought on this at all.

filmfann's avatar

@Leanne1986 I don’t think this saved any money. He was sentenced to Life plus 1000 years.
So, we have 1000 years to go.
