Live action: Babe.
Animated: One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

They aren’t just favourites featuring dogs: they’re general favourites. Babe is my feel-good film.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua was hilarious and I loved all the pups.

Homeward Bound.

I still want a Shadow…

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale.It was such a heartbreaking story of a dog’s love for and devotion to his owner.

@Seek_Kolinahr Shadow makes me cry every damn time. I feel like I’m bracing myself for it throughout the entire movie.

So sad at the end.

^ That, “Eight Below” and “The Fox and the Hound”

I have a love/hate relationship with dog movies. The dog dies most of the time, which is way more heartbreaking than one of the characters dying. These I’ll watch even though they tear me up inside…

Marley and Me
My Dog Skip
Shiloh

Also, Turner and Hooch. That dog didn’t die, did it?

I used to cry every time I saw a Lassie movie. Lassie Come Home is a classic.

I cried like a baby when I saw Homeward Bound.

I never saw Marley and Me, but I want to watch it, yet I dread the inevitable crying that I know I will do.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua was really cute.

Lady and the Tramp – another classic.

I am an animal lover and I love anything with animals in it. There was a Disney movie about mountain lions that was really touching, too. It was like a documentary but they had voices (like thoughts) for the mountain lions.

Benji wins, all other pooches can sniff his arse & back off subserviently.
I love the Homeward Bound movies but fucking hate Shadow, what a fucking pussy.
The scene in the first film when he falls down a pit near the railway lines & he wants to give up.
After all the miles & shit they went through he just lies there, fuck all the matter with him in terms of injury & says “just leave me i’m too old.”…fucking drama queen dick.
Then at the end when the pets are reunited with the kids, he insists on being the last one, “oh Peter i’ve missed you & I love you” You would be dead if it wasn’t for Chance ya daft cunt!

I do not remember the title, but it was a cooking show.

It’s not a movie, but: Seymour Butts from Futurama.

“A Boy and His Dog” , a 1975 film .

Old Dan and Little Ann, the Redbone Coonhounds in “Where the Red Fern grows.”
I just answered a similar Q. about favorite film dogs and mentioned I had a coonhound for years so am partial to those hound doggies.

ucme's avatar

Training Day, Snoop Dogg.

wildpotato's avatar

^^ Nice one. In that vein: Sandor Clegane in Game of Thrones.

Up “SQUIRREL!!!”

@wildpotato I literally cry every time I see that episode of Futurama… God that ending was sad as hell.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Going with Lassie, that dog was so cool.
If I’m in the mood to bawl, Marley & me. I hated Jen after that movie for a little while.

ucme's avatar

Dog the Bounty Hunte…no wait!

Skaggfacemutt's avatar

I am not a fan of dog movies, but I did like Milo in “The Mask.”

janbb's avatar

Nobody’s mentioned “There’s Something About Mary”?

And of course, Santa’s Little Helper.

Kardamom's avatar

Not from a movie, but I loved the dog on the TV show The Ghost and Mrs. Muir named Scruffy.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I love some of the Lassie films – Lassie Come Home sticks out the most in my mind. I also love the original Disney version of Greyfriars Bobby, NOT the remade version where they used a Westie. What was all that about? Bobby was a Skye Terrier or at least a cross breed that resembled a Skye (probably more likely going by the few pictures/portraits there are of him).

pleiades's avatar

OLD YELLER! One of the first mature films I cried over as a child.

But my all time is 101 Dalmations. Was that a 90s exclusive?

glacial's avatar

@lx102303‘s answer was the first that came to my mind. ;)

I don’t know about my favourite “dog movie” – I loved several of the ones listed here. If we’re throwing out great movies that happen to include dogs among the cast, I would give a mention to Asta of the Thin Man movies. The same dog played George in Bringing Up Baby, of course. :)

janbb's avatar

@glacial I love Asta and my Ex loved him for crossword puzzles.

Kardamom's avatar

I also love the Black Sheepdog from the first season of Doc Martin. I don’t think the dog had an official name.

glacial's avatar

@Leanne1986 They used a Westie??? What the hell were they thinking?!!

My daughter said Hotel for Dogs

@cookieman That was a wonderful movie!

One more vote for @lx102303‘s answer, A Boy and His Dog.

No one mentioned Balto. It’s sort of new school from the 90s, but it’s also I guess old school bye now haha. It seemed pretty darn adventurous and pushed the limits of ones will power if I remember correctly… (am I confusing this with the book, “Stone Fox” ?) might be the same general story…

Seek's avatar

Balto is based on a true story, though I don’t know how loosely.

Also, Kevin Bacon <3

OpryLeigh's avatar

@glacial I KNOW!!!!

janbb's avatar

@pleiades @Seek_Kolinahr “Balto” is quite true. I did some research after seeing it and that Rosemary was one of the ones saved by the vaccine. And there is the statue of Balto in Central Park with a plaque.

I took my 8 year old son to the movie. If you remember, the last scene is shot live and shows a grandmotherly Rosemary showing her grandchild the statue of Balto. As it ended, I was awash in tears and a bit shamefaced until I looked around and saw every other mother and grandmother in the theater were crying too.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I also really loved Frankenweenie.

Mimishu1995's avatar

Chestnut: Hero of Central Park. It’s a heartwarming story about a dog and two orphan girls. One of my all-time favorite.
