I don’t really know this song but the title felt familiar and reflexively a tune manifested in my mind.
After a few minutes, it dawned on me that I believe this is the song that Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel duet in the film Elf while Zooey Deschanel’s character is showering in the department store’s bathroom due to a water bill issue.
I Googled a full set of lyrics and honestly see how it comes across as a date rape song.
The presumably female vocalist of the song expresses the desire to leave several times but the male insists she stay by telling her the weather is unfit for travel.
“I simply must go (Baby it’s cold outside)
The answer is no (But baby it’s cold outside)
There is also a portion that suggests that the female vocalist has been drugged.
“Say what’s in this drink? (No cabs to be had out there)
I wish I knew how (Your eyes are like starlight now)
To break this spell (I’ll take your hat, your hair looks swell) (Why thank you)”
“Ah, you’re very pushy you know?”
“I like to think of it as opportunistic”
She then talks about how her family is going to notice and be suspicious of her absence.
I don’t claim to know what the song is actually intended to be about, as I said, I’m unfamiliar with it. I’m just saying that I see the impression it gives that folks are complaining about.
