Is there no French word for the word "chest", other than "poitrine"?

I’m referring to the whole front part of the body in French shoulder to waist, not

“The woman holds her baby to her chest. La femme tient son bébé contre sa poitrine.”

or
“coffre m (plural: coffres m)
The pirates found gold in a wooden chest. Les pirates ont trouvé de l’or dans un coffre en bois.”

thoracique?

@ragingloli You’re right, I see “ventral” too in the link I posted.

According to your link, those are both adjectives not nouns.

Diaphragme?

flo's avatar

Yes, they are adjectives. I see thorax, torse…

What is the noun form of “ventral”?

Diaphragme is only part of the chest.

My French=English dictionary lists only poitrine for the body part chest.

A bit off-topic here, but aren’t body parts supposed to be incompartible with possessive pronouns in French? I mean, from what I’ve learned, it should be La femme tient son bébé contre LA poitrine, not SA poitrine. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

janbb's avatar

You’re wrong. They do have to agree with the gender of the following noun but possessive pronouns are fine to use.

@janbb That’s why I posted the OP. Th e dictionary and daily usage is just _poitrine”. Is there a site that gives you the form of the word you want?

@flo Some adjectives don’t have any noun forms. I suspect that is the case here.

By the way, the “you’re wrong” was directed at @Mimishu1995 as my explanation indicated.

@janbb There is nothing in my post to indicate that I thought you were addressing me, re. “You’re wrong” follows @Mimishu1995‘s “Please correct me if I’m wrong.”

Re. some adjectives don’t have noun forms, that’s true.

@flo Glad you clarified my confusion. We’re agreed that I was addressing @Mimishu1995 .

Ok.

I just thought of the words torso and thorax, they don’t really mean chest since they include the back as well.
