9 mm semi.
I hate using a shotgun. I am good with a rifle, but I am happiest with a handgun. Twice I used a .45 revolver, and I hated that. There’s an anticipation aspect to using a revolver which is a problem for me.

If I were attending Church, I would use a 9 semi, with spare clip.

ragingloli's avatar

The MG42, for patriotic reasons.

janbb's avatar

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gun outside of a military history museum or reenactment. I’m totally fine with that.

ragingloli's avatar

Granddad killed alot of invaders on that beach.

Patty_Melt's avatar

My grandad could kick your grandad’s ass.

ragingloli's avatar

Your granddad would not have made it off his boat.

KNOWITALL's avatar

9mm here, too. I hate rifles up by my face.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I have a .22 rifle which was my great-grandad’s, and it was my mother’s 16th birthday present. It will be 100 years old soon and is in about 90% like-new condition. I take it target shooting a few times a year.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Hard to pick, probably a Ruger 10–22 for the fun factor and general utility.

cookieman's avatar

The non-existent kind.

Zaku's avatar

I’ve only used firearms in games, but I guess the 7.5 cm Kampfwagenkanone 42 L/70 , since it always comes with a Panther tank. ;-)

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The MG42, for patriotic reasons.

Can you see the HBO show Man in the High Castle over there? In it Germany and Japan won the war and occupy North American.

Seeing 1960s America with a German (east coast) and Japanese (west coast) veneer is fascinating. They did an amazing job.

rebbel's avatar

I despise arms.
Put a gun to my head, and I would say paint ball gun.

zenvelo's avatar

My favorite firearm is the one just taken from an NRA member.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

“We don’t want to ban your guns”

Lol.

Demosthenes's avatar

@zenvelo Oh snap.

My favorite: super-soaker. Had a lot of fun with those.

cookieman's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me: Oh no. I most certainly do. Iā€™m sorry for any confusion.

elbanditoroso's avatar

My favorite is a properly registered firearm in the hands of a responsible owner.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

A rifle.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@elbanditoroso I wish I could give you a thousand GA’s for that answer, and so very true.

rebbel's avatar

In that case I want to give two thousand GA’s to @cookieman!
Even truer.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Most people who want to ban guns don’t openly admit it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@elbanditoroso No registration required here. Can’t take what you can’t find. :D

Most states in the U.S. do not require registration of guns and there is no Federal program to register guns. In fact under Federal law a national gun registry is illegal and eight states also have bans on any gun registry.

But that doesn’t mean we aren’t carrying.

Seven states ā€” Maine, Arizona, Kansas, Wyoming, Alaska, Vermont, and now Missouri ā€” do not require a permit to carry a concealed handgun within their borders.

https://www.gunstocarry.com/gun-laws-state/

ragingloli's avatar

And most of the gun owning people, fantasising about slaughtering those pesky libruls, do not openly admit that, either.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ragingloli haha, half my family and friends are liberals, maybe you have to live here to understand but it’s not quite like that for most of us. Self protection in rural areas, is far more serious.

Like the idiot who was tailgating me the other day, early in the morning, we were the only two on a lonely country road and he decided he wanted to play. Luckily, he backed off after a few minutes, or it would have been his misfortune, not mine.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -“it’s not quite like that for most of us” In my experience, exactly.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I’ve never even been in a fist fight, let alone want to kill anyone. Defending myself or my property or loved ones, is a whole other deal.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme One of those would be a showpiece here. So neat!

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL I know right.
I love old school stuff & would rock up with that beauty dressed in full hussar uniform & a look of pure arrogance on my pretty face :D
Apparently, the name blunderbuss means thunderpipe…awesomeness never ends!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme Just once in my life, I’d like to load up lead balls or something. We like black powder, but that just sounds fun!

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL Go on girl, have a blast!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL – I have been in fist fights, have no desire to kill anyone either and agree with you 100% about personal and property protection.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ucme-I wonder how loud that is…

KNOWITALL's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Wiki says ‘stunningly loud’ haha!

ucme's avatar

Definitely loud enough to blow the froth off a coffee, or the tache off a fuhrer :D

seawulf575's avatar

I like my Beretta CX4 Storm. It’s a small .45 cal carbine. Pretty accurate and just a lot of fun to shoot.

seawulf575's avatar

But I also like my crossbow. Does that count as a firearm?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@seawulf575 Heck ya it counts, we love ours, too. With my husbands epilepsy, it’s a lot better for him.
Did you know they are selling a .22/ crossbow combo now? The gun store next door says they’ll be in any day, maybe a Valentines gift for hubs.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

.222 Remington with 9X scope; varmint shooting, in cow pastures.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Why just a 9x my varmint rifle has a 14X scope and is a 223cal.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical My gpa loved Remingtons for the same thing.

kritiper's avatar

Smith and Wesson model 27 .357 magnum revolver with 8 3/8” barrel, blued with walnut grips.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@seawulf575 -Sure.I got a chance to fire one and it was a lot of fun!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I used to go with my FIL in Vermont and shoot woodchucks, he was amazed by my shooting skills, for a “city boy”, at several hundred yards !

MrGrimm888's avatar

Hmm. The favorite, that I own, is a Berretta PX-40. It fits my hands perfectly, and is just perfectly designed.

I own a Ruger 10/22. Great weapon. Mine has custom stock, and over under sights. I have multiple clips, and my biggest holds 50 rounds. No kick, ridiculous accuracy.

My Mossberg 500, is heavily modified. Collapsible stock, and all the trimmings. I keep it by my couch. 12 gauge buck shot, and there’s nothing that I can’t hit, within 25 yards. It’s a light gun, so it kicks hard. But. I can’t think of many scenarios, where it would fail me. If I get a knock on the door, that I didn’t expect, I pump it next to the door. People will tell me anything, after they hear that.

I love my Ruger Super Redhawk .44 magnum. It’s 30 years old, but it is an impressive design. My father, tweaked the trigger. So. It typically fires twice, when pulled. It only has 6 bullets. But, it will destroy something.
It used to be a “hog gun.”
You don’t hunt hogs, without a powerful sidearm. It’s got a few notches, on it’s belt… What a shotgun couldn’t handle, it did.

Years ago, my father shot a boar 5 times, with a shotgun, and it kept charging. He pulled the Redhawk, and in a panic, emptied it. 300 lb, dead hog.
It’s really more powerful than any shotgun. It’s no good for long range. But. Up close, it’s amazing.
It has, something like a 5 inch barrel.
It’s nickel plated, which makes it not great for defense. But, it is formidable. You can shoot down a tree, with it. It will get through a bullet proof vest. It’s a godlike weapon. Seeing what it does to wood, or soft tissue, makes it…ridiculous.
It kicks up. Nice, and predictable. I can fire it one handed. Which is good. The flash, is pumpkin sized. It burns the hair off of my knuckles, when I shoot it…
It’s not my favorite weapon. But. It’ll absolutely destroy the target.

I had an Intratech .22 mag, with 30 round clips. That thing, was crazy. It was a downsided version of the Tech 9. My Ruger 10/22 clips worked with it. So. I could have a 50 round clip in in it too… It was a crazy weapon too.
It was stolen from me….
That sucks…

My father (ex-special forces) has a Browning .308, semiautomatic. That thing, is ridiculous. We can hit a dime, from 150 yards, with it. He’s an ex-sniper. That’s a. 30 Cal bullet…

My favorite is still my Berretta…
It was crazy accurate, and very slim. I could carry it, in my waistband, and nobody would know. It got me out of a few sticky situations…

My brother, has a highly modified AR-15. That’s his baby…Within 25 yards, I’d have him with my Mossberg 500. Outside of that, I’d be in trouble…

rebbel's avatar

Wow, I would feel so safe around you.
~

Dutchess_III's avatar

I shot an elephant gun once. Cheese and rice. Knocked me on my butt! But I hit the bowling pin.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I don’t use guns anymore, really. I just use my my hands…

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Tropical Woodchucks wow! Squirrels here.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I shoot paper mostly.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

We would get boxes of .222 from the farmers, they knew my FIL and asked what ammo that was being used. The farmers hated woodchucks because the cows would break a leg in the pasture from the woodchuck holes and no more milk from that cow.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

Self protection in rural areas, is far more serious.

Like the idiot who was tailgating me the other day, early in the morning, we were the only two on a lonely country road and he decided he wanted to play. Luckily, he backed off after a few minutes, or it would have been his misfortune, not mine.

What you’re saying is rural people have poor judgment, anger issues, no respect for the law, and bad attitudes that don’t belong behind the wheel.

Road rage isn’t something to brag about.

Dutchess_III's avatar

If I moved out to the country I’d get a rifle for protection from certain critters, like coyotes. I wouldn’t carry it around with me, though.

kritiper's avatar

For a rifle, I’d like a M-1 carbine.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Several hundred yards, @Tropical_Willie, or several hundred feet?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Dutchess_lll up here we like extreme long range varmint shooting like three to five hundred yards.
That’s for ground hogs and gophers.

SergeantQueen's avatar

I just learned to shoot about 3 months ago so I don’t have a “favorite” but I shot a glock 40 and was comfortable with it compared to others I tried so, probably that.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

YARDS @Dutchess_lll ! That was the reason FIL was impressed ! 9X scope made it !

SQUEEKY2's avatar

When it comes down to it,you might have a favourite but what are you you going to use it for, are you going to reload,if you are going to reload and just target shoot do you want a semi auto spitting brass every where?
I like revolvers after shooting you just extract the spent shells and put them in the box to reload later, not having to bend over picking brass up all over the place.
Ammo can be expensive and reloading saves a lot of money.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Assault rifles, get the headlines. But, planned out hit, is done with a revolver. No shell casings on the ground, and therfore less evidence.

I’m not saying that any of us, are planning a hit….

But, there is a much smaller chance of misfire, or jamming too. If the first bullet doesn’t fire, on to the next. A revolver, isn’t as safe as a semi-auto. It always has a round chambered. But, it the most reliable weapon. Double, or triple action. If the first round won’t fire, odds are that the second will…

They’re a bit more dangerous, to carry, but more reliable.

If it’s going to be carried, in a purse, a hamnerlerless option, is the way to go. Double action, hammerless. Probably a .38 Cal . That way, it won’t get accidentally cocked, pulling it from a bag.

I still recommend mace, for a female. It’s like $20, and will ruin an attacker’s day. Spray it it in a figure 8. Targeting the nose, and mouth…Then run, and sceam.
It’s likely that you can outrun a man, and he’ll have a rough time…Unable to see, breathe, and probably vomiting…..

If you’re female, you should have Mace…

SavoirFaire's avatar

I wouldn’t say I have a “favorite” because I’m not really a gun enthusiast. But my brother and I learned to shoot using our grandfather’s Winchester Model 70, so there’s a bit of a sentimental attachment there. Shooting and cards were the two things that he insisted we learn how to do, and really the only ways he seemed to be able to relate to us. He was so proud—and so angry!—whenever one of us did better than him at either.

Grandpa was a statewide champion gin rummy player, and he basically flipped the table the first time my brother won a game against him. It was a bit startling, but he was also yelling, “My boy, you’ve done it!” in the happiest voice at the same time.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@kritiper – I had a chance to fire my friend’s M1 carbine. I liked it very much.
@Squeeky-My friend said the rounds for his M1Garands were over $5 a piece.Kind of makes things expensive.

kritiper's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille $5 each for a round for a M-1 Garand?? That is very expensive for a military .30–06 (ball ammo) round. With so many hunting rifles that use a common game round, surely a cheaper alternative could be had. (The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) used the .30–06 round.)
(The M-14 and the M-60 use the Winchester .308 which is a bit shorter than the .30–06.)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@kritiper-Whoops wrong gun!
My friend was telling me about a brett light 50 that he was saving for that the rounds were around 5 bucks a piece.
I saw M1 Garand rounds for .75—$1.00 a piece.
He tells me that he willed one of his Garands to me. That’s a good friend, right there:)

MrGrimm888's avatar

The next pistol I plan to get, is a 1911. I haven’t settled on a brand yet…

I’m really interested in a Desert Eagle .50 cal too…

Both are pretty expensive though…

MrGrimm888's avatar

It’s not about exciting. It’s about accuracy, and dependability.

I’d love an actual AK-47. My friend’s husband is active military. He’s been deployed in Iraq for years. He’s been talking about sending one back, piece by piece. I hope that he does. I want to shoot it…

ragingloli's avatar

“Itā€™s not about exciting. Itā€™s about accuracy, and dependability.”
Get a Glock, then.

MrGrimm888's avatar

A Glock, has a composite stock. That makes it vulnerable to melting problems…

Even wooden stocks, have that issue. If I run a few 30 round clips, through my mini-14 carbine in quick time, the stock smokes… The barrel gets too hot.
That’s why high rate of fire weapons, have multiple barrels. The A-10 Warthog, is a great example. It has (if I remember correctly, ) a 30 mm nose gun. I don’t remember the fire rate, but it’s crazy. If you fire it long enough, the steal barrels will melt…

They typically only fire the weapon, for a few dozen seconds. Which does plenty of damage. They are primarily anti-tank aircraft. So. They are typically armed with depleted uranium tipped bullets. There are massive tank graveyards, in Iraq, where it isn’t safe for a person to hang out. They’re radiation, is too much…
Another fun gift, from the US…

ragingloli's avatar

I somehow doubt that you would ever get into a situation where your gun would melt.

MrGrimm888's avatar

The stock, melts over time.

Patty_Melt's avatar

@Dutchess_III, I’m wondering what good a rifle would do to protect you from coyotes if you would not carry it with you.

MrGrimm888's avatar

A good AR-15, or M-4….

SQUEEKY2's avatar

This question, what is your favourite firearm?
Ok Firearm for what shooting paper targets 300+ yards?
Shooting trap at the range?
shooting metallic silhouettes at a club shoot?
Defending your family and property against intruders?
For combat?
For hunting Deer in the BC mountains?
Each of these requires a different type of firearm.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

^^ Most gun people will say what are your must have five guns?
1. A good, reliable self-defense pistol. (Glock 26) bulletproof, accurate and concealable
2. A plinking/pesting rifle (Ruger 10/22) cheap, accurate and plenty of fun
3. A SHTF, WWIII, aliens attacking rifle. (AR-15) Can do anything you need it to rifle
4. A good pump 12 gauge shotgun. (Remington 870) Self explanatory
5. A solid bolt action heavy cal hunting rifle, typically .308 This is a deeply personal choice. I have a Mosin Nagant in this slot for this because of the affordability of the rifle itself and the history, availability and affordability of the ammunition. I also would pick the rem 700.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

I meant I wouldn’t take it to Wal-Mart and the grocery store @Patty_Melt.

ragingloli's avatar

@Dutchess_lll
For public places, with lots of people, you should use the HK GMG

Dutchess_III's avatar

I have one of those @ragingloli! Except there is a camera on the tripod.

Jons_Blond's avatar

A water gun. I have no need for something that will kill beings. I don’t live my life in fear.

@Dutchess_III why would you shoot a coyote? We had a den of coyotes that lived behind our home for 16 years and the only harm they caused was killing outdoor cats. That’s wasn’t their fault. It was the fault of the owners of the cats. Coyotes keep natural areas healthy. http://www.freshvista.com/2013/patterns-in-nature-coyotes-are-good-guys/

I recently had a chance to shoot an AR-15 and I took the opportunity. The feeling I had is impossible to describe. Part scary and part exhilarating I guess though I have no desire to own one. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Shooting is fun and a good sport,as long as it’s done safely, people that dislike firearms fail to realize a few things about firearms a good quality one can appreciate in value better than any 401k I have one I bought new in 1992 for $600 today that gun is worth $4000 not bad eh?
others can be family heirlooms something to remember Grandpa from and be in the family for many decades.

Jons_Blond's avatar

I have Corning Ware dishes worth just as much, both monetarily and sentimentally. :D

MrGrimm888's avatar

I have lived in several bad neighborhoods. One of my best friends was murdered, when I was 19. He had just turned 18…

When I was 22, my next door neighbor was murdered.

Until I was 32, I lived in an apartment, where I heard gunshots, about twice a week…

I used to carry a gun, to walk my dog, every day.

One morning, I heard a large exchange of gunshots. At least a couple dozen. I sat in my staircase, with a pistol, and called the police. There was a splinter, in my brain, of someone lying on the ground outside dying. So. Against my better judgment, I went outside. As soon as I walked out, a black and white (police car,) pulled into my apartment complex. I was armed, and had reported the shooting. I sat down quickly, on my front step. The fucking car, drove right by me, and around the parking lot, then left.

I wasn’t a LEO, at the time. But. I called the cops and reported a gun exchange. I’m a big guy. I had a pistol. The cops drove right by me… Talk about shitty cops… I’m glad that I didn’t get detained, but damn…

When they left, I walked down to the old railway line, where I heard the shots. Stupid? Yes. But, like I said, I didn’t want there to be someone lying there bleeding to death… I snook in, saw nothing, and left….

But the cops should have gone in there.WTF?...

I didn’t call them, to drive through, and do nothing…

Favorite firearm in general? For targets? For protection? For fun? For long range?

Trust me when I say, I’m fully stocked and all of them are favorites-in general.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke -If you were allowed to keep only one?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille it really doesn’t work like that different types of shooting require different types of firearms.
You won’t shoot trap with a revolver, you’re not going Moose hunting with a 22, you won’t go plinking with a 30–06.
get the idea?

Dutchess_III's avatar

She’s just saying to pretend you can only keep one. Which one would you keep?

MrGrimm888's avatar

I used to have a. 30–06. I hated the thing. It put a hole in something. But it was a teeth rattler…
A .308, is much more comfortable. And pretty much the same round.
Just less powder.

I don’t think I have ever eaten Moose… What’s it similar to?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Elk but a little more greasy, I’ve had both when my BIL was hunting in Wyoming. That was 45 years ago.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I prefer dark meat. I prefer Duck, to Chicken. It’s pretty much all dark meat…
I’d like to try some Moose, or Elk…

I like Deer, but I hate smell….

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 -Of course but he only gets to keep one. I thought my question directed towards him was crystal clear. ;)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888-If it’s similar to elk it tastes like yuck.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Lol. You need sauce. It’s all about the sauce.

We use orange juice, to take the game flavor, of alligator tail. Then we fry it, or blacken it.
Then, it’s great….
I wager, there’s something similar that can be done to Moose, or Elk.

Your body is constructed of the protein you consume. I like the concept. I’m part gator. My girlfriends, are part of me. They digested my sperm. So. Parts of them, are made of me…
I have parts of my own body, made from the protein of their bodies….
Call me what you want. But, we’re made of each other’s protein… it’s a fact…

That’s how protein works. It is used by the body, that consumes it…
“You are, what you eat”...

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 -That explains my urge every fall to fight a bull elk.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I’m a predator. I eat, almost anything. I steal protein, from anywhere.
I like being part gator.
I take from nature. It would take me.
I love eating shark. I assume that they would love eating me…

Everything I eat, would probably eat me….

I have no qualms, eating anything…

Jons_Blond's avatar

^would you eat a roach or slug?

MrGrimm888's avatar

I’ve eaten slugs. I lived in Germany….
They are best, in soups.
Got ‘em.
Roach. Not unless I have nothingelse.

Coolhandluke's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille fine. Then I’ll hold onto either my M&P 9mm or Glock 19. Small, concealable and powerful enough to stop someone. The main reason I’ll keep a pistol in lieu of anything else is because most of the time when you need a gun it’s close range.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke- True, but there is nothing like the ratcheting sound of a shotgun…
@McGrimm-Snails are pretty good if you don’t think about them too much.

Coolhandluke's avatar

For protection, I can kill quicker and more people with a handgun. Shotguns are very limited on distance and only hold upwards at about 7 rounds VS my M&P at 13 rounds. The sound of a shotgun is definitely a good warning when you pump it but that doesn’t exactly solve the problem. Plus, a shotgun is more dangerous to use in the home. If you shoot close range, the shot can go through the person and into someone or something behind them. My handguns all have self defense rounds that are made to stay in the body. Don’t get me wrong, a shotgun is great for self defense, perfect for subjects coming at you down a dark hallway because aiming isn’t that important at 10 – 20 feet.

Coolhandluke's avatar

@MrGrimm888 no gun guy refers to magazines as ‘clips.’ They are not clips. A clip is something that holds the bullets waiting to be loaded into a magazine. A magazine is what the bullets are fed from into the firearm.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke-Aiming while nervous is exactly why I like a shotgun but access can be difficult.

Coolhandluke's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille that’s a very fair statement. However, you’re not going to be able to carry a shotgun anywhere in public. A shotgun renders itself a bad choice outside the home – realistically and not in a zombie world.

ragingloli's avatar

Depending on distance, you do not have to aim much at all.

Coolhandluke's avatar

You’ll need to be a better aim within 10–15ft. After that a general direction will suffice. Too long a distance and it’ll only pepper the person and they’ll keep coming. I’ve had a shotgun shoot at me from 400 yards. I know peppering.

ragingloli's avatar

I actually meant pistols. I think they call it “instinctive shooting”

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke- I was thinking more along the lines of home defense. The only time I ever needed that was when a man walked into my house while I was in the shower.
My shotgun was safely put away and I wouldn’t take a handgun in the tub. Lol
I’ve been hit by BBs and paintballs.that’s all I’ve got

Coolhandluke's avatar

Paintballs hurt like a bitch! My very first time playing I got shot in the mouth. It popped on my tooth and slammed in my throat.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke -Ow! What’d it taste like? Chicken??
I was shot in the back by a yellow-bellied coward. Lol
It stung a lot more than I expected

Coolhandluke's avatar

We didn’t play on courses. We played in the woods, gorilla warfare style hunting each other. I was jogging down a hill and had just jumped over a log when a ball screamed through the air and went through my parted lips and exploded on my tooth and landed at the back of my throat. That was a lot of pain and I thought I’d die from choking. It put me on my knees for a few minutes. I don’t remember the taste but it was bad. That’s when I learned to wear a full face mask.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke- I’m glad you’re alright.
I wasn’t on a course either and asked for it. Lol Curiosity, and all…
All this talk is making me want to go to the range. I have a hand thrower for skeet but my shoulder is messed up so that leaves that out.

Coolhandluke's avatar

That sounds like a plan to me! I have some ‘special’ rounds I want to try with my 12ga! They’re called Dragon’s breath. Check them out some time. Just search images for a good idea of what they do.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Are people answering what is their favourite ,or what is their best survival gun, against man or beast?
For all round survival it would be my 870 wingmaster it could be used for sport and defence ,you can load it with slugs for any thing big.

But after a lot of thinking my favourite would be my Browning citori special trap.
over and under 12 gauge removable chokes, magna ported barrels high gloss finish, the gun is beautiful and comfortable, and with that ported barrel I can shoot it all day and barely feel it.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Coolhandluke – I just did. Wow! You should ask friends over for a BBQ/target practice.
I ruined my friend’s metal “spatula” target with his own M1 Garand. That made me happy :)
I plan to visit him this summer and ruin more.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 -You can answer your favorite for anything.
Is Magna Port a franchise?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

No it’s a fancy term they use they drill a bunch of little holes at the end of the barrel which greatly reduces recoil.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 -I thought it was just called porting. I do know of a small company called Magna Port, though.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@Coolhandluke . I had an FFL, and sold guns, for years. I’m a former LEO, and my father is ex-special forces. With all due respect, I am a gun guy…

I live down south. We often abbreviate words here. Clip, is the preferred word, for magazine… Think y’all, instead of you all…
And a gun guy, knows that a pistol, is only used to get you to your real gun. A shotgun, is the best weapon, for home defense. It depends on the barrel size, and shells chambered. A short barrel, will spread the shot wide. There’s little chance of a spread, getting through more than a a wall. You are correct about the distance. It’ll usually be short range.
Defense rounds, are indeed designed to mushroom, in soft tissue. And any ricochet, should be a fragment, not like an FMJ. However, your round would need to hit a stud, in the wall, to stop it’s penetration power. Most defense rounds, are indeed a hollow point. But, they also have a metal jacket, and typically more powder. Some, will go through a bullet proof vest.
A shotgun shell, will possibly have a few pellets/projectiles, go through a wall. But they will be, small, and have reduced speed.
It’s not safe, to fire any weapon, in a place where people are around. Firearms 101. Be aware of your target, and what’s beyond it. This can be best achieved by choosing angles, before firing.
You are right again, about the “pump effect.”
The idea, is that it’s a deterrent. Everyone knows that sound, even some animals. It’s a universal translation.
It means that you are in a world of shit…
If you have to pop off a shot, in the dark, the muzzle flash will give you temporary sight, for shot number two. You shouldn’t need more than a few shots, to disable a threat. The stopping power, and damage, from 1 hit, should be sufficient. Inside 20 yards, you out gun anyone else.

The versatility of a shotgun, also is unprecedented. Barrel change is simple, and fast. Variety of shells, almost endless…

I’m just saying that you are underestimating a shotgun.

I had a guy shoot at me one time, with a pistol, from about 25 yards. I didn’t even move. He was drunk, and had a heavy caliber gun, with like a 2 inch barrel, and was shooting out of a vehicle. And, he was using one hand. There was little chance he’d hit me. And, he didn’t…
I would have hit the deck, if he had a shotgun, or even a rifle.
