Who knows this song?

“Great Question” (1points)

When I was quite small, my grandma tried to teach me to sing a song called Mairzy Dotes And Dozey Dotes. I never did get it right all the way through.
I forgot all about it decades ago. Suddenly it popped in my head the other day. Now I can’t escape it.
Here’s how it goes.

I thought my grandma made it up or something, because nobody I ever asked had heard of it.
I’m not sure if it’s a dance tune.

Does anybody here know it?
Do you have a weird song experience of your own? If so, will you share it?

Search engine gives about 40 links. Songs aren’t weird just because we forget them as years pass.

I remember that song, and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby singing it.
Found it!

ucme's avatar

Don’t know it!
One my grandparents taught me was called There’s a hole in my bucket

Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy. A kid’ll eat ivy too wouldn’t you. Big hit in the 40s. Standard fare in nursery schools by the middle 50s.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Hole in the bucket was another standard “dear Liza, dear Liza”.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Did any of you sing “the world upside down” in nursery school?

Patty_Melt's avatar

We didn’t have nursery school when I was little.

@Sagacious, it isn’tWeird because I forgot it. It is weird because they wrote it weird.

@ucme, I’m going to see if I can find your song.

I remember it from somewhere, not with that music. Maybe grands sang to me.

snowberry's avatar

Yes, it’s a real song, and my father used to sing it to me.

My grandmother used to sing that song to me all the time, when I was little. She had some other songs that I have googled and they were real songs. One was something like “swim little fishy, swim if you can. Swim swim swim all over the dam.” I was listening to NPR once and they were playing old music from the 1940’s and there was a female singer singing that one. Memories…...

That’s the 3 little fishies: Boopboop, diddam-daddam-waddam and choo

I remember Mairzy Dotes – when I was a kid, my parents bought a record (either a 78rpm or 45rpm) and played it on our record player. We kids listened to it over and over. Long time ago.

Song, is a way to transmit knowledge.
I have not heard this song before, though…

janbb's avatar

Oh yeah, I remember it well.

I know @ucme ‘s song too.

ucme's avatar

@Patty_Melt & @janbb I recall only a couple of lines here & there but it amused me as a kid when they sung it to me.

stanleybmanly's avatar

My kindergarten nun called mairzy dotes the ungulate song. So at 5 we were a peculiar bunch of kids that knew the word and could spell it.

zenvelo's avatar

@stanleybmanly That’s three different songs that are all on the same tune (which was written by Mozart):

The Alphabet Song
Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
Baa Baa Black Sheep

I didn’t realize that Baa Baa Black Sheep was also the same tune until I was today-years-old.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ucme Here’s the Hole in the Bucket. I remember it, too.

The neighbor used to sing it to me when I was a little girl.
She scared the hell out of me XD

Zaku's avatar

I know it. My parents used to sing it (a few lines, anyway). I sometimes do too.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Anyone here that was traumatized by their parents with The Little Blue Man? I made my mom stop singing it to me, hated it. She has further traumatized other generations since.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -LOL! I just listened to that song….

zenvelo's avatar

The Little Blue Man should be renamed The Stalker Song.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@zenvelo I know, I hated it. My mom was always so hurt that I didn’t love it. I’m like, mom, he doesn’t die and he keeps coming back!

After falling off the building
“And there in the street, stood the little blue man, who said with a tear in his eye…..I don’t love you anymore.”

That song stressed me out! haha!

seawulf575's avatar

The bane of most parents a few years back was “the wheels on the bus”. That will get stuck in your head and eat at your brain!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@seawulf575 Can’t be worse than Baby Shark. Even 1,000 beers on the wall is more tolerable. haha!

ucme's avatar

I knew an old woman who swallowed a fly, I dunno why she swallowed a fly, perhaps she’ll die…etc

MrGrimm888's avatar

My Mother used to sing to me a lot, when I was very young. The main song, that I remember, is “You are My Sunshine.”

I can’t even think about it, now. It makes me want to cry….

ucme's avatar

@KNOWITALL That actually annoyed the shit out of me :D
Henry is such a prick, use the axe & chop his head off Liza!

Patty_Melt's avatar

I looked it up on YT.
I think if anyone sang that one to me when I was little, I would have revised it so Liza loans him a bucket.
