But suppose it’s true, and god did love and admire gays more than any other group – wouldn’t that be a kick in the pants for those religious kooks! The irony would be great.

@ragingloli I’m in the bible belt and literally never heard ‘the gays’ blamed for any natural disaster.
Now, I have heard a few hardcore old school preachers say that everything bad that happens is because of the acceptance of sin as a normal way of life, mainstream secularism. But never one group of people in particular.

@elbanditoroso Sure, the hardliners who believe homosexuality is a sin rather than natural occurring in nature. I wouldn’t say they speak for God in any way, they are simply misguided humans assuming they know what God thinks based on a Bible written and translated by more fallible humans.
Jesus said he came to abolish the old ways, giving us a new template of love. I guess at least two of these people didn’t read that part of the bible.

Because the Christian Right has lost most of the battles in the culture wars and for a while, gay marriage was one they still had a fighting chance in. Even though they have now also lost that one, they still fight against the mainstream societal acceptance of homosexuality (exemplified most strongly in the legalization of same-sex marriage). Therefore, for them, it is one of the most obvious examples of society’s degradation. If they believe that God punishes society with natural disasters and pestilence for being corrupt and morally bankrupt, homosexuality is one of the clearest culprits since it’s the most recently accepted sin and they can’t help but see it as the reason for God’s ire. There’s a joke that the Christian Right is obsessed with the “three G’s”: guns, God, and gays.

To use a favorite expression of the alt-right net: we gays live “rent free” in their minds.

I would agree, although Christian conservatives often tell me that churches that have become more “inclusive” have lost members and the ones that have gone fundamental are blossoming. I have no idea if that’s true. Around here, the trend is toward inclusivity; there is an Episcopal church that put up a rainbow flag with a banner that said “all are welcome”. On Sundays their parking lot is over capacity and people park on on the nearby streets. YMMV.

As a card carrying fag, I can say with assurance that there is always some right-wing fanatic blaming people like me for any and all natural disasters. The Health Minister of Israel was one of the recent ones, and he’s recently been diagnosed with COVID19.

Only if the “god” you are referring to is a jealous homophobic prick, like apparently some people say their god is.

Seems to me the people who say such things tend to be the ones who actually deserve some wrath. And to be ignored and/or excommunicated, banished or reeducated.
