Have you ever cooked with Lemongrass? What type of flavor does it add?

I saw a youtube video today that was showing using dried Lemongrass in making a homemade seasoning. I love the aroma of Lemongrass essential oil, but I don’t think that I’ve ever eaten any dish made with Lemongrass. I like trying new things, so I’m wondering what I’d be in for before I buy it to try it.

If you find the Lemongrass oil scent, chances are that you will enjoy cooking with fresh or dried Lemongrass sticks.

Personally, I don’t care for it, but seem to be in the minority.

I have. It has a unique flavor. I guess the closest I could come up with is lemon zest with no sweetness, but it also has a grassy flavor that’s vaguely like celery—but not really. It really is unique and hard to describe in terms of words or comparisons. It’s kind of like being asked to describe cinnamon to someone who has never tasted it.

You’ll want to strip off the outer layer and bang it several times with the spine of a knife to release the flavor before chopping finely. It’s not easy to chew, so you want really thin slices. Thai food is a cuisine that commonly features lemongrass. Tom kha soup with chicken or shrimp is pretty appealing to most people that try it. Lemongrass is one of the main flavors.

I love it, and top my salmon with it for a light lemony subtle flavor when I can find it.

Have you tried it yet? What did you have it with? How did you like it? How accurate were the descriptions?

@gorillapaws No, I haven’t gotten to try it yet. I had a family emergency and have been away for a while. While there my focus was changed drastically. Now that I’ve returned home, I hope to get back to normal soon. Lemongrass is still on my bucket list of things to try
