“According to International Handball Federation (IHF) regulations, female athletes must wear bikini bottoms with a side width a maximum of 10 centimeters (3.9 inches), with a “close fit” and “cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg.”
“Meanwhile, men must wear shorts that are “not too baggy” and 10 centimeters above the kneecap.

It seems ridiculous on the face of it. Why should that matter? I think the Olympics are fast becoming irrelevant – at least in my mind.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I agree @janbb. Their job is to win hand ball games, not to play sexy for half of the audience.

canidmajor's avatar

Well, gosh, why aren’t there objections to how the men dress? No, let’s make sure that the women wear less, because athletic prowess and cohesive team work just isn’t enough. Grrrr.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Men.should have wear Speedos to highlight their junk for whoever is interested (not me.)

ragingloli's avatar

Nah. Men should wear mankinis

Dutchess_III's avatar

So gross!

ragingloli's avatar

Just imagine drumpf wearing it.

kritiper's avatar

Mine is not to reason why.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I can tell you why…sex. Sex even if the women have to sacrifice comfort.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I had a male FB friend say the girls choose the uniforms. He said ”…Female sports professionals understand their marketing potential, and revealing or otherwise sexy clothing is one facet of that potential.”
This article says otherwise. They just want to play ball.

stanleybmanly's avatar

I agree 100% that the babes should compete without a stitch of clothing. I look forward to the closeups and “stimulating” replays, as well as extensive analysis on forms and “equipment”. And as for the male athletes, provisions might be provided toward employment of the “3rd limb” in volleys.

I guess I’m odd man out here. To me sports is about WINNING. That’s what it’s about. Not that I want Norway to win, I’m speaking rhetorically here. If I were their coach, I wouldn’t give a rats butt if they want to wear Depression Era flower sacks to their ankles, and freaking army boots. What the hell ever flips thier lid . Just freaking play to WIN..These are the Olympics, not a damn Miss Universe contest…what the hell is wrong with people today?

stanleybmanly's avatar

It’s just a less than subtle indicator on what the olympics are really all about.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

I guess so, but it sucks. My dad, (my real dad, not imaginary Old Pappy) used to tell me that Drill Sergeants in the Army tell recruits,“You’re in the Army, Jody has you girl”. I’d tell my team, if I were a womens coach, “You’re in the Olympics, you can impress Sammy Stud Muffin on the flip flop”. Impolite but sports aren’t about political correctness . Always concentrate on the task at hand.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

And I know the stupid committee ordered this shit. But if they chose to make an issue out of it, and stick by their guns maybe they can implement some change. Who said A journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step? A lot of money is on the line in sports. Hit some corporations in the wallet and you can bet there will be change. Money talks bull shit walks.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It would be hard to concentrate on the task on hand when your bikini bottom is shoving sand up your crack

stanleybmanly's avatar

@Nomore lockout. Now more than ever the task at hand is to monetize the games. You want to maximize ad revenue, particularly tv revenue. Advertisers know what sells. It ain’t gold medals!

Nomore_lockout's avatar

I agree. So.PROTEST. Throw a monkey wrench in the path of whoever decides on this shit..I will guarandamtee there will be changes made.

gorillapaws's avatar

I wasn’t aware beach handball was a thing. Maybe if they went full nude, it might get more viewership?

jca2's avatar

@Dutchess_III: I agree with your friend.

Yes, sports should be about winning and good sportsmanship and all that, but apparently it’s about marketing and I’m sure they realize that men want to see women jumping around in bikinis, not biker shorts.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Then shouldn’t the men be required to wear speedos instead.of loose, comfy shorts?

jca2's avatar

@Dutchess_III: I am not arguing with you. I agree with your point. I’m pointing out why I think they want the ladies to wear certain things.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I am proud of the Norwegian team for putting their foot down! They still look good to me. A body to die for. Without sand grinding into their butts.

kritiper's avatar

Maybe you could get a job with the Olympics, setting dress standards…

kritiper's avatar

In the Olympics of old, men were the only ones to participate and they participated in the nude. I always thought the tight, somewhat revealing outfits were to show off the human form, and not about sex.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

Seems everything is about sex now days. Has its time and place like anything else in life..but when it takes precedence over a medal, trophy or anything like that in sports, regardless of the venue, Olympics or anything else, then I call B.S.

Zaku's avatar

My opinion is that a bikini bottom requirement for athletes is sexist, pointless, tasteless and generally terrible all around.

smudges's avatar

The truth is, a man can choose to objectify a woman whether she’s wearing a bikini or a burqa. We don’t stop lust by covering up the female form; we stop lust by teaching men to treat women as human beings worthy of respect.

Author: Rachel Held Evans (1981 – 2019) was an American Christian columnist, blogger and author who made her name by telling the evangelical community they should reach out and embrace the LGBT community, rather than shun and denounce people who have different sexual orientations.

(Never thought I would quote a christian!)

Just for a little perspective.

Then go to next page for the image.
It’s a side by side of the men’s and women’s teams in uniform.

chyna's avatar

@dutchess “without sand grinding into their butts.”
Also, without the bikini bottom itself wedging up the crack. I would spend too much time picking the bikini out of my crack and miss a spike or two.

smudges's avatar

@canidmajor My knee-jerk thought when viewing the photo was, “disgusting!” Thanks for the perspective.

Dutchess_III's avatar

My knee jerk is exploitive.

Forever_Free's avatar

I feel it is a sexist uniform rule. The main reason for what you wear when playing volleyball on court or on sand is to offer the best range of motion during play. Uniforms that ride up are a pain in a few areas.

As a player range of motion and comfort is really what it is about. Yes, I wear spandex when playing either court or sand v-ball. I really don’t care what fans/observers think.

I am glad that the team decided to do what they wanted despite the fine. Perhaps this can open up discussion for proper change.

chyna's avatar

^pics of you playing or it never happened.:-)

Forever_Free's avatar

^^^. oh it happens. Is that a request? lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

I wore spandex too, but it came down mid thigh.
Some times I wore comfy shorts. Never did I wear anything revealing. I was playing ball to win, not looking to get laid.

Forever_Free's avatar

^^^^. what she said!

Nomore_lockout's avatar

Amen @Dutchess_III That’s what I’m talkin’ about, WINNING is what it’s all about. Not sexual titillation. Can you say: Olympics?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Men’s beach volleyball ball uniforms are loose. Not at all revealing or skin tight, @kritiper.

Also, obviously someone else has the job of setting dress code. If it was up to me I’d ask the woman what they want.

RocketGuy's avatar

It would be cool if the women’s uniforms looked like the men’s uniforms. Whatever works without hindering their performance.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Beautiful. More like art, and much more pleasing to the eye.

RocketGuy's avatar

@Dutchess_III – lots of nice detail. I’ll bet they planned this months ago to be able to get them made in time.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Sure and they’ve been practicing in them.
Figure skating is next.

RocketGuy's avatar

@Dutchess_III – figure skating costumes have come in all flavors. The flowy ones are pretty. Most have gone to leggings, although usually flesh-tone. There is the occasional bikini-type, which can go away (as far as I’m concerned).

jca2's avatar

The “A-Team” from the 2021 Women’s Beach Volleyball team are on the Today Show right now and they said their uniforms are designed by them with their sponsors, and they are not made to wear them, they like to wear them. They said they just want to clear that up.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Interestingly, I noticed the women gym volleyball players wore shorts, not thongs.

jca2's avatar

None of them wear thongs, @Dutchess_III.

Dutchess_III's avatar

They act like a thong.

jca2's avatar

@Dutchess_III: A thong is about a one inch wide (or less) strip of fabric in the back.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I know what a thong is @jca2. I was making a comparison.
