There’s a 56K acre man-made lake with just under 1K miles of shoreline about 10 miles from my house. I’d love to have a house on it, but they were waaay too expensive when I moved back home!!!

It is about 230 miles to the nearest beach in both GA or SC.

There’s a lake one street over from me. It’s nice. Has a beach on one end. Bunch of docks. Folks fish it and skate on it.

The ocean is about a 45-minute drive from where I live.

ragingloli's avatar

About 500m from the river.
That is about 60000 barleycorn for you colonials.

About ¾ of a mile from a river, and about 1.5 miles from Long Island Sound. Lots of water. How I like it.

janbb's avatar

Two blocks from a lake in several directions and ¾ mile from the ocean.

200 meters from Chambers Creek.
2 miles from Puget Sound.
4 miles from American Lake.
30 miles from Lake Washington.
100 miles from the Columbia River.

10 minutes to lake and the James River. Not counting springs or lakes on private property.

About 4 miles from an artificial lake and about 5 to 10 miles from the Delaware River.

Atlantic Ocean is out my window and about 80 feet away at high tide.

Salt Marsh is behind the house and about 50 feet away at high tide.

There a good sized stream 10 feet behind my house, and the ocean is less than a mile away.

@Hawaii_Jake

What would happen if you tried to ride the stream down to Tom Selleck Beach? ;)

zenvelo's avatar

There is a reservoir with a 2.7 mile circumference about 9/10ths of a mile from my place. And the ocean is 25 miles away. San Francisco bay is about 12 miles.

I have never lived more than 30 miles from the ocean.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@Brian1946 I’m afraid I’m a lousy Hawaiian. I rarely go to the beach. Tom has little to far of me disturbing him.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Two miles to man made fishing reservoir in county park and two hour drive to ocean.

A few hundred feet to a small river. A wide swath of forest follows it through the city, with a paved path alongside. I see lots of wildlife, like deer, hawks & owls.

Also I’m 7 miles from the beach on Lake Michigan.

It’s a 16-mile drive from my house to the beaches by Santa Monica.

The last place we lived in Canada, was less than a mile from the Ottawa River.

@Hawaii_Jake

If Tom “I’m proud to be heterosexual” Selleck is floating around in an outlet of that stream, I hope a bull shark takes your place. ;)

Lake Tahoe is about 20 miles away from where I am now.

Where I grew up, the San Francisco Bay was about 4 miles away.

Nomore_Tantrums's avatar

About nine miles from the Lampasas River, which is almost bone dry most of the year anyway.

Inspired_2write's avatar

Less than a mile to a rageing River that is filled every year from Glacier run offs hundreds of miles away.
It a boon for Fire emergencies if a wild fire starts.
Fire Dept just hooks up to that never ending river if they need too.

Ten feet

@Brian1946 Venice Beach and Santa Monica were a 9 mile bicycle ride when I was growing up.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I’m probably 2 miles from the Pacific, but here’s an interesting curiosity about San Francisco about which most of the population is completely unaware. Since the quake in 1906 and the fire that burned the town down the city has been obsessive about water availability to meet any foreseeable contingency. So the water dept has scattered throughout the city huge underground cisterns of varied capacities. They are usually located under street intersections, with the only clue to their existence being circles of bricks embedded in the pavement above the caverns. The city has better than 11million gallons in total sitting in these vaults.

kruger_d's avatar

My back yard is on the river.

Jeruba's avatar

Within close range of the SF Bay, a short, easy drive to fringes of the Pacific. About 45 minutes to the Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk.

Grew up on the other coast, even closer to Quincy Bay (extending out to meet Massachusetts Bay) of the Atlantic Ocean: about 10 minutes’ walk from my childhood home to the beach, where looking northward you can see the Boston skyline.

Jons_Blond's avatar

There’s a lake two blocks west and another five blocks east. I live on an isthmus. I can walk to the water. :)

^^^ I am so jealous!!

I live across the street from a lake, so maybe 60 steps. The community I live in used to be a summer community where people were only allowed to stay between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Now it’s a full time community with a great school district, so it’s very attractive to people with children. Since it’s a lake community, in the summer, it’s really like being on vacation. There are parties on the beaches and at this community and others, people are hanging out with the summer vibe, walking to the lake, etc. July 4th is crazy with fireworks and parties. It’s very safe. In the winter, it’s a different story but in the summer, it’s great.
