“Sigma people” (or more properly, “sigma practitioners’) refers to psychologists and psychoanalysts that follow Sigmund Freud’s treatment teachings to address and cure psychological neuroses. Sigma comes from a scientificization of Freud’s first name.
Freudian psychoanalysis, the better known treatment approach, was most common early in Freud’s career, when he was developing and perfecting his theories on dreams and perception.
Later practitioners improved on the original Freudian treatment approaches and worked with additional ameliorative approaches, which had a somewhat more successful reception on the part of patients. Outcomes where better.
This later approach practiced by ‘Sigma people’ or ‘Sigma practitioners’ leverages not only dreams (Freudian) but also address patient issues by examining their writings and personal utterances as indicators of patient state-of-mind. As such, it gives a clearer picture of patient needs and potential therapy approaches.
