Was I hallucinating?

“Great Question” (2points)

I woke up a little before 5 this morning, sat up, yawned and stretched. It was pitch black in the room but I could feel my dog, Cato, against my legs.
I leaned over and scratched and banged on him, softly saying “Good morning!”
Then my black cat, Vanta, showed up on the bed, bumping Cato with her nose and meowing.
I reached out to scratch her…and recoiled. Her short black hair was all stiff and spiky, like she’d rolled in the mud and it dried.
It was really, really dark so I couldn’t really see her…but she had white on her muzzle and a bit on her feet. Vanta has NO white anywhere.
The cat just mowed and arched when I pet it, and also banged on Cato who didn’t react.
I mumbled “Hate to tell you, this isn’t your cat, Cato!”
It was SO WEIRD and I was wide awake.
got up and went to the bathroom. I couldn’t turn on the light due to sleeping husband. When I got back mystery cat was gone….but Vanta was stretched out on the edge of the bed with her feet hanging off, staring in that direction. She’s a fighter but all she did was stare. I pet her and her fur was soft and downy like normal.
I WAS awake when it happened.
Mystery Cat enjoyed its pets, BTW.
WTH was that???

Snuggle rats. Call an exterminator.

Honestly, it just sounds like you were a little between sleep and wake. Dreams intruding on reality is not that uncommon. I believe it’s more common if your sleep is somewhat disordered, or chemically assisted, but I’m sure it’s happened to most people to some degree,

Long ago I had a cat who used to bring home friends on occasion. It was startling the first time, then I got kinda used to it.

At our other house, where we lived for 22 years, we had a black cat that would wander in and out. He’d go eat Vanta’s food, then explore the rest of the house where no humans were.
In the beginning it was disconcerting because it looked just like Vanta…probably related, actually (long story) but before we knew it was a different cat it seemed like Vanta was space warping!

But the phantom cat this morning was so real. I could feel it’s spiky, hard fur…and I don’t think you can physically feel things in your dreams, can you?

I have heard of cats having multiple owners, several families that thought that the cat was theirs.
Cats are sluts, they’ll smooch up to anyone.

I’m know what it was! Cato has a short, brindly coat. He has white on his feet and under his chin. I bet I was rubbing his coat backwards while trying to make a face out of the white parts I could make out. Seeing faces is an instinct for humans….but the meowing? Weird..

MY CAT IS NOT A SLUT! YOU’RE A SLUT RAGGIE!!

Probably you were in a dream state of some sort. Between wakefulness and sleep. Scientists have observed people who are sleep deprived falling asleep for seconds and then awake again, basically trying to steal sleep. Sleepwalkers are in an unusual state of sleeping and wakefulness also.

There are two possibilities that this could be. One, you were hallucinating because you where between sleep and awake which made you think your cat was there but your mind made the fake cat have white hair and the cat was made by your mind and played a trick on you. The second reason is that the cat you saw was real and it snuck in somewhere and when you went to the bathroom the cat ran off.

I figured it out @KRD. It was the dawg

@ragingloli Some cats are sluts. Our cat Spunky stays at 4 houses within 2 miles of our house. I Know where he goes because of his AirTag. He sleeps all day and roams all night and sometimes gone for days at a time. Neighbors text me messages of his whereabouts with pictures of Spunky eating their cat’s food and lounging about their houses.

I’ve had some pretty vivid dreams before. Sometimes they blur together with reality. That’s my best guess.

I think you’re right…you were stroking the dog backwards. The cat may have been meowing on the floor next to the bed.

Speaking of weird sleeps – I woke up once in the middle of the night (as an adult!) standing over the cat’s litter box and peeing. Splashed all up my calves. Took me a couple of minutes to figure it out cuz I was half asleep. LOL

Do you take Ambien? My wife takes it periodically and we have a set rule that she is not allowed to act on any impulses she has when she takes it.

No I don’t. I’ve heard too many horror stories about it, one from Rick’s 94 year old dad. I don’t know how it’s still on the market
