If you've eaten squirrel, loved it and the gravy too would you admit it?

One of my grandsons grew up dirt poor but now he’s a junior college student on the Dean’s List. He told me he loves squirrel and squirrel gravy. It almost made me throw up.
If you have eaten squirrel would you admit it on here but if you’ve never eaten it , would you? I wouldn’t.

Of course.
If you have eaten rabbit, would you admit it?

Rabbit ? Sure I’d admit it ! But I’ve never been invited to eat rabbit.

Squirrel?
You’d be nuts to.
I have eaten beaver before though, of course.

Well sure, has nothing to do with being poor for anyone I know, it’s good locally sourced food. I’d take a deer loin over store-bought meat any day.

I’ve ate turtle soup, rabbit, frog legs, wild turkey, bear, and of course squirrel. I don’t love any of them (turtle was the worst!), but I cook them for my husband and his friends fairly often. You can cook wild boar, too, deer, elk, all kinds of things.

Wild morels are very popular in spring and people will pay good money for a couple pounds (not too many people will sell since they’re delicious.) Older folks or disabled will put ads in the paper for some of these things, since they can’t hunt or gather, but still miss the taste.

These are all hillbilly delicacies, no shame in our game, living off the land and no HGH or additives. It’s fun to hunt, to gather and go gigging or fishing.

I’ve eaten squirrel, though it was roasted on an open fire so we didn’t have gravy. I’ve had rabbit the same way. Both the rabbits and squirrel were wild and we caught/killed them.

@ucme I’ve heard beaver tail is quite delicious and rich in fats. Or did you mean…?

Stop complaining about squirrels.

@KNOWITALL I will leave that up to you, all I can add is…it was warm & wet.

Brunswick Stew according to Georgia friend of mine needs three meats pork, chicken and squirrel. His Brunswick Stew is delicious.

^^^^^^^^ He is fifteen miles away, spent six weeks at Xmas with us and I will never, ever under any circumstances blow away a squirrel in this neighborhood or anywhere else and cook it for him. It is against the rules to fire a gun around here. Besides; squirrels are sort of cute.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Aster hahaha, that mental picture is hilarious, sorry. What state are you in?

My husband killed one with a bb gun in our backyard (should be legal everywhere right?) and I fried it up for him, with gravy and biscuits of course. I’m not a big fan, but he sure is.

We call them tree rats here, no loss, there are millions.

No problem. I’m a meat eater all the way. I’ve seen a chicken run around with it’s head cut off. Later I helped strip off the feathers, then cook and eat it. I helped skin a deer, and later ate it, I played with a little pig, and I love bacon. When I see calves playing, I say “Oh how cute, veal in the field”.

Rick tells me about how when they went to his folks cabin in Oklahoma he and his little brother would get up early and go squirrel hunting and bring them back for Mom to gut and skin. Fried squirrel and gravy. He said it was was the best thing ever.
I can imagine that it would taste pretty good, seasoned with nuts the way they are. I’d probably like it if I didn’t know what it was.

For the record, of his own accord, Rick is totally against sport hunting and he wouldn’t shoot a squirrel today. He just wants to pet them and hold them and hug them. That’s what he says when we see tigers and bears and stuff too.

I’ve eaten squirrel, rabbit, frog legs, & deer & ALL 4 are delicious!!! It’s not something that I run around bragging about; however, it’s also something that I don’t hide!!! When the subject comes up (& it does frequently) I eagerly discuss how good they taste. IF asked, I admit that I’ve eaten them & then we share our favorite recipes.

Haven’t had squirrel, mostly because I tend to go for stuff with more meat on them. I love frogs legs, but it takes about two dozen for a meal (Ha Ha).
I have eaten gator, rabbit, blah blah, what’s your point?
Should he be ashamed of eating something one can find in their back yard? There are people who would find that some stupid thinking. Some parts of the world, people only get insects for meat. They would love to have some squirrels playing in their backyard, I bet.
Most of the world finds it sensible to eat what is found in their environment.
Lobster, crab, eaten much more in coastal areas than the plains. Plains dwellers eat primarily grazers.
I’m not understanding what the issue is here.

Squirrel would be similar to rabbit, possum, porcupine, beaver, musk rat, any small herbivore. If they eat plants, they probably taste good.

Squirrels eat peanuts, peanut butter, peanuts, pecans, pistachios, grapes, corn, squash, zucchini, pumpkin, strawberries, carrots, apples, sunflower seeds. I would think the meat would be yummy!

And there’s always ketchup!

To me a squirrel might be like a tiny kangaroo which is very good and not weird at all and so is the gravy.
