I stopped peeling most vegetables, because it is not really necessary.
I never peeled mushrooms.

It’s not necessary to peel mushrooms. Cut off the end of the stem that was in the dirt. Some people wash them, and some people simply wipe them off.

Rinse them and cut off end.

What’s to peel? They don’t have a skin or a rind.

Last week I made a butternut squash and wild mushroom curry , didn’t peel any of the five types of mushrooms.

@zenvelo As a teen I would peel the outer slimey dirty layer off of the cap of the mushrooms. I also peel carrot and potato skins.

The only thing that deserves peeling are onions.

And garlic.

And garlic.

My mom just opens the can.

Canned mushrooms are the worst!

ragingloli's avatar

I am sure opening a can counts as some form of peeling.

^^ Well then, I guess we’re in the peel crowd :)

I don’t eat raw mushrooms. I wash them right before I cut them up and cook them. I don’t peel them.

@RedDeerGuy1 In case you’re wondering, it is OK to eat raw mushrooms. Cut off the end of the stem, clean them whatever way you want, and eat them.

I have dried mushrooms that equal 12 pounds of fresh, they include Shiitake, Porcini, Crimini, Black Wood Ear and a mixture. Hydrate them in very hot water 35 minutes before use.

I have never heard of peeling mushrooms. I use them as-is. One of my cooking mentors washes or wipes mushrooms with a light brush or wet towel. I do not believe the washers/wipers remove everything harmful and regardless, a little dirt won’t hurt me.

I just wipe mine off with a damp paper towel. But I pop the stems off because I don’t like the texture – tougher than the cap. Canned mushrooms? Rubbery! ewwww

KNOWITALL's avatar

Never heard of it. And we eat a lot of mushrooms, natural and store-bought.

SnipSnip's avatar

I’ve never even considered peeling mushrooms.

Kropotkin's avatar

Only if it’s going a bit slimey on the outer layer.
