Another sad story of a person born before their time. The world wasn’t ready for her. She did her thing, and tried to rise above, but trailblazers who don’t give deference to the BS that preceded them will always pay a price.

I’m sorry she had such a very tragic life and death.

She had a voice that went straight to your heart. The “no details given” makes me fear the worst.

I loved her back in the day and admired her spunk. This may age me but I had Nothing Compares single on tape until recently when I gave my collection to my cousin.

She was brilliant, tragic, and misunderstood. I was struck how intelligent she was.
Last year her son committed suicide. Afterward, she OD’d. She was crushed by it.

Saddened to hear of her passing at this young age.

This is the first I’m hearing of it. It’s very sad. I disagree with her choice to rip up the photo of the Pope. It’s one thing to disagree with a religion, but it’s another to go out of your way to try to disrespect it publicly the way she did. She had a hell of a voice and certainly gave Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” a beautiful rendition that surpassed the original in many ways (though my favorite is undoubtedly Chris Cornell’s version which probably never would have been made without her making the song so famous).

I read about her life and I’m sure the suicide of her teen son did not her her issues. I would be surprise if it was a natural death. I really loved her voice. I think she lived 56 years of hell and just couldn’t deal with it any long. Seems her mother was extremely abusive and would tell her she wished she was never born. A bad beginning that led to a sad life and possibly a bad end. I hope she’s at peace now. Despite all her troubles, I think she tried to make the world better for others by speaking out against the wrongs in the world.

I was never impressed with her. Always thought of her as “Skinhead” O’Conner.

In 1992 she ripped up a photo of the pope to protest the Catholic church’s support and cover-up of child abuse.

She was right, but sadly did not make her message clear.

In 1992, without any particular connection to the Catholic church or any religion, I knew about priest molesters and how they were sheltered by the church. It wasn’t a secret. John Paul II let it continue, with offenders being shuffled from church to church, and crimes treated as internal matters, not reported to the police.

It’s shameful how people tried to shame her.

Sorry you had to endure the undeserved scorn, Sinead. Sorry you endured the other mental difficulties. You deserved better. RIP

She had a beautiful voice. Honestly, I NEVER understood her actions & reactions. Now that I’m older, I feel sad that she was born to a horrible mother & her son ended his own life. Can’t really say that I understand her any better; however, I can say that I do understand her actions/reactions just a bit more. It ALWAYS saddens me when someone young dies…YES, I consider 56 young & I hope she’s at peace now!!!

I grew up with her music and liked it at the time. I didn’t know much about her, but she seemed angry and sad to me. I had assumed she had some really bad things happen to her as a child. I think it’s good she spoke out to try to help people and society, but her motivation seemed from a place of personal pain and anguish. I didn’t know she was bipolar.

Hearing about her death today without a cause listed, I assumed it might be suicide, but we don’t know yet. She was 56, a year older than me, so this is another death of someone close to my age. That hits me too. So many reminders that death is lurking.

The reports that I saw this morning said that it was NOT suspicious, but also did NOT mention suicide, so I’m trying to NOT jump to conclusions. The family is requesting privacy & I feel that they deserve that RESPECT!!!

Thank you so much @LadyMarissa! Natural causes at 56? So sad. She had so much more to do. I look at her picture on that site and she’s so beautiful – physically and spiritually.

Natural causes are disease and old age from what I’ve read. Maybe they don’t want to speak on the specific disease.

^^ I didn’t know that disease qualified as natural causes, but you’re right. Basically any cause of death that does not happen outside of the body is considered ‘natural’.
